Steps to Build Your Instagram Ads
There are a few things you have to do before you can create an advertisement for Instagram. Here are the first steps:
1. Facebook Page
Facebook owns Instagram and controls its advertising. To use ads on Instagram, you must first have a business Facebook page.
Once you have a Facebook page for your business, you can continue the process of advertising on either Facebook or Instagram or both.
2. Business Manager
To create, manage, and monitor the effectiveness of your ads, you must enroll in Facebook’s business manager account.
You can also add other people to the account and assign them specific roles.
3. Add Instagram Account
If you don’t already have an Instagram account for your business then create one.
When you have a Facebook page, a Facebook business manager account, and an Instagram account, you’re ready to connect!
In the business management system, go to business settings in the left panel. Choose Instagram accounts and click “claim new Instagram account”.
Here you will add your Instagram account username and password.
4. Create your Ad
Now for the fun part–creating your advertisement!
Click on the link for ad creation in your Facebook business manager account.
You will choose the goal of the ad, such as brand awareness, engagement, or downloads. Then, you will name your campaign and choose your target audience.
You can choose various types of ads for your campaign: photo ads, video ads, carousel ads, and story ads.
A call-to-action button can be added to the advertisement as well. This is where you want to link to a destination that will achieve your ad goal (e.g: app store, website).
There are two options for paying for the ad. You can set a daily budget or a lifetime budget.
Content and Size
Now that you know how to create an advertisement, you want to make sure your images or videos look attractive and gain attention. Here are tips on size, specs, and content for your ad content:
A recommended photo size for Instagram advertising is 1080 x 1080 pixels. Instagram has minimum resolution requirements of 600 x 315 pixels to 600 x 750 pixels.
A square looks best on Instagram. Make sure to use a photo that has a 1:1 ratio.
As for captions, no more than 125 characters is recommended. Use a caption that is enticing and represents your brand.
The image itself cannot be more than 20% text. Keep what you have to say for the caption rather than the photo.
Like photos, videos look best as a square. Videos should be made of square pixels, H.264 compression, and high profile if possible.
For audio, AAC audio compression is recommended.
Again, we recommend using no more than 125 characters in the caption. The goal of Instagram ads is to entice the view by the photo or video.
The same minimum resolutions apply to videos. Videos must be more than 3 seconds but no more than one minute in length.
